Installing Terraform
Before Crumb's configuration can do anything, Terraform has to run on your machine. The good news: Terraform is a single program file with no runtime to install alongside it.
The rule
One binary, on the PATH, proven by
terraform version.
Terraform is written in Go and ships as one executable. Installing it means getting that file from an official source and putting it somewhere your shell looks for commands (a folder on your PATH).
Official routes, by system:
# macOS with Homebrew
brew tap hashicorp/tap
brew install hashicorp/tap/terraform
# Ubuntu or Debian, after adding HashiCorp's apt repository
sudo apt update && sudo apt install terraform
# Windows
winget install Hashicorp.TerraformYou can also download a zip from HashiCorp's releases page, unzip it, and move terraform into a folder on your PATH. Then check:
terraform versionIt prints something like Terraform v1.9.5 plus your platform. terraform -help lists every command. If it also says your version is out of date, that is only a notice; nothing stops working. Tab-completion is worth having too: terraform -install-autocomplete adds it for bash and zsh.
Teams usually need one agreed version, because a newer Terraform may understand language features or state details an older one does not. Terraform keeps nothing running in the background: each command starts, does its job and exits, so there is no service to manage. Tools such as tfenv let you keep several versions and switch per project, and the configuration itself can declare which versions it accepts — you will see required_version in the providers section.
The shortcut
Treat installation as get, place, prove. If terraform version fails, the problem is almost always the "place" step.
Get
Install from HashiCorp's Homebrew tap, apt repository, winget, or the official release zip.
A classic error is command not found: terraform right after unzipping by hand. The file exists, but not on the PATH, or the terminal was opened before the PATH changed.
Drills
Answer fast — trust the rule.
What does installing Terraform essentially give you?
Which command confirms Terraform is installed and shows its version?
You unzipped terraform into Downloads and get command not found. What is the likely cause?
Why should a team agree on one Terraform version?
Remember
- Terraform is one binary: get it from an official source, place it on the PATH.
- Shortcut: get, place, prove with
terraform version. - Trap:
command not foundmeans the PATH step was missed.
