OpenClaw vs Claude Code
Both get called "AI agents", both can run commands and edit files, and both can use Claude models. So people ask which one to install. The useful answer is that they are built for different places and different moments, and many people use both.
The rule
Claude Code works beside you on code; OpenClaw lives in your chats.
Claude Code is Anthropic's official tool for AI-assisted software work. It started as a command-line tool: you open it inside a project, and it reads the code, runs tests and edits files while you watch and steer. It is built by Anthropic around Claude models and tuned for developer workflows.
OpenClaw is a community-built, open-source project that runs independently of any one AI company. It runs as a Gateway that stays on, you reach it through messaging apps, and it can use many providers: Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, or local models through Ollama. Its jobs reach well beyond code: answering messages, keeping notes and files in order, running scheduled tasks, reacting to webhooks.
| Question | Claude Code | OpenClaw |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | Anthropic | An open-source community (MIT licence) |
| Where you talk to it | A coding session in a project | Messaging apps such as Telegram or Slack |
| Models | Claude | Many providers, including Claude and local models |
| Built around | Working on a codebase with you | A standing assistant for everyday automation |
They are not strict rivals. OpenClaw can run on Claude through the Anthropic provider, and a developer might use Claude Code at the desk for a repository and OpenClaw on the phone for everything else.
The shortcut
Ask two questions about the task: Where will I be when I ask? Is the task a codebase I am working on? At your desk, inside a repository: Claude Code. From your phone, across daily life, or on a schedule with nobody at the keyboard: OpenClaw.
"Refactor the payment module until the tests pass"
You are at your desk, inside the repository, reviewing each change. A coding session, so Claude Code fits.
The trap is choosing by brand: "I like Claude, so Claude Code." That skips the real question, because OpenClaw can use Claude too.
Drills
Answer fast — trust the rule.
Can OpenClaw use Claude models?
Who builds OpenClaw?
Which task fits OpenClaw better than Claude Code?
Which task fits Claude Code better than OpenClaw?
A friend says, "I prefer Claude, so I must use Claude Code, not OpenClaw." What is wrong with that reasoning?
Remember
- Claude Code works beside you on code; OpenClaw lives in your chats and stays on.
- Decide by where you will be and whether the task is a codebase, not by model brand.
- OpenClaw can use Claude too; the two tools can sit side by side.
