What OpenClaw Is

Introduction 12 minOpenClaw is a self-hosted, open-source gateway that connects the chat apps you already use to an AI model you choose, so you can message a personal agent that can act for you.

What OpenClaw Is

Picture sending a Telegram message, "add milk to my shopping list and tell me what else is on it", and a program on your own computer edits the list file and texts you back. No new app, no website to log into. That is the experience OpenClaw is built for, and the rest of this course is about how it works and how to run it well.

The rule

OpenClaw is a gateway between your chat apps and a model you choose.

Each part of that sentence names one piece of the system.

  • A gateway. OpenClaw runs one long-lived program, the Gateway, on a machine you control: your laptop, a rented server or a small box at home. Everything passes through it, like calls through a switchboard.
  • Your chat apps. You talk to it through messaging apps you already use: Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, Signal or iMessage. Each connected app is called a channel.
  • A model you choose. The thinking is done by an AI model from a provider you pick, such as Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI, Google's Gemini, or an open model running on your own hardware through Ollama.

Between those two sides, OpenClaw adds what a bare chatbot lacks. It can use tools (run a command, read a file, search the web), keep memory in files, and act on a schedule without being asked. That is why it is described as an agent that does things, not one that only talks.

Two more facts matter. OpenClaw is open source under the MIT licence, and it is self-hosted: the Gateway, your settings and your memory files live on your machine. What does leave the machine is what you send to a hosted model provider in order to get an answer, plus the messages your chat app carries. If you use a local model, even the thinking stays at home.

You may also meet it under earlier names, such as Clawdbot or Moltbot, in older videos and posts.

The shortcut

Describe any OpenClaw setup with three answers: Where does the Gateway run? Which channels reach it? Which model thinks? Then follow one message through those three parts.

Following one messageStep 1 of 4
  1. You send it

From Telegram on your phone: "Add milk to my shopping list and tell me what else is on it."

The common mistake is thinking OpenClaw is the AI. It is not a model. Swap Claude for Gemini and it is still OpenClaw; take the model away and it cannot think at all.

Drills

Answer fast — trust the rule.

In OpenClaw, what does the word channel mean?

What does "self-hosted" mean for OpenClaw?

quick drill

You switch your agent from an OpenAI model to a Claude model. Which part of the setup changes?

quick drill

You use a hosted model provider. Apart from your chat app, who else sees the text of your conversation?

Remember

  • OpenClaw is a gateway between your chat apps and a model you choose.
  • Three answers describe any setup: where the Gateway runs, which channels reach it, which model thinks.
  • Trap: OpenClaw is not the model; without a provider it cannot think.

0/1 solved

Write your answer, then compare it with a rubric and a model answer.

ExplainMore than a chatbot?

A friend asks, 'Is OpenClaw just another chatbot like the ones on websites?' Explain what OpenClaw actually is, name its three main parts, and give one thing it can do that a website chatbot cannot.
