Breeze and Jetstream

Breeze 15 minBreeze and Jetstream are the earlier Laravel starter kits: Breeze gives minimal auth screens and Jetstream adds two-factor login, session management, API tokens and teams, and both still power many existing apps.

Breeze and Jetstream

Most Laravel apps running today were started before Laravel 12. When you join one, you will often find it was built on Breeze or Jetstream, the earlier starter kits. You need to recognise them, know what they gave the app, and know why a new project picks something else.

The rule

Breeze is the minimal kit; Jetstream is Breeze plus account security and teams.

Breeze gives the plain essentials: login, registration, password reset, email verification and a simple profile page. You install it into a fresh app and choose a stack, such as Blade, Livewire, React or Vue:

composer require laravel/breeze --dev
php artisan breeze:install

Jetstream starts from the same screens and adds the heavier account features:

  • two-factor authentication
  • browser session management, for logging out other devices
  • API tokens, through Laravel Sanctum
  • optional teams, where users belong to groups with roles
composer require laravel/jetstream
php artisan jetstream:install livewire --teams

Jetstream offers two stacks: Livewire or Inertia with Vue.

Both work like today's kits: they copy code into your app, and then it is yours. The difference is age. Laravel 12 introduced the new React, Vue and Livewire kits in the installer, and Breeze and Jetstream no longer receive new features. They still run fine in the apps that use them.

The shortcut

To identify an older project's kit, open composer.json and search for its package name. laravel/breeze means minimal auth. laravel/jetstream means expect two-factor, sessions, tokens and maybe teams.

  1. Search composer.json

You find "laravel/jetstream" listed under require.

The trap is pulling Breeze or Jetstream into a fresh Laravel 12 app out of habit. The installer's own kits are the current choice.

Drills

Answer fast — trust the rule.

quick drill

Which feature does Jetstream add that Breeze does not provide?

quick drill

How do you quickly tell which kit an existing app used?

quick drill

A Jetstream app has a teams table. What does that tell you?

quick drill

For a brand-new Laravel 12 app with a Livewire front end, what is the usual choice?

Remember

  • Breeze is the minimal kit; Jetstream is Breeze plus account security and teams.
  • Identify the kit from composer.json.
  • Trap: new Laravel 12 apps use the installer's kits, not Breeze or Jetstream.

ExplainReading an older project

You join a team whose Laravel app was started a few years ago. Explain how you would tell whether it used Breeze or Jetstream, what each would have given it, and why neither is the default choice for a brand-new Laravel 12 app.
