Vibe Coding vs Owning the Code

What is Vibe Coding? 12 minVibe coding means accepting AI-written code by feel, which suits throwaway work, while anything other people depend on must be read, tested and understood by you.

Vibe Coding vs Owning the Code

You type "make me a page that shows today's orders", press Enter, and a minute later a working page appears. You never opened the file. That style of building — describe, accept, run, repeat — has a name, and it is worth knowing exactly where it helps and where it hurts.

The rule

Vibe to explore; read, test and own anything you ship.

Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want to an AI and accepting what comes back, judging it only by whether it seems to work. You do not read the code closely; you steer by feel. The phrase caught on in early 2025, and it names something real: for a throwaway experiment, it is a fast way to find out what is possible.

The trouble starts when vibe-coded work reaches people who depend on it. Code nobody has read can hide a wrong edge case, a leaked password, or a test that was quietly changed so it passes. "It ran once" is not the same as "it is correct".

Owning the code means using the same AI agent differently. You set the goal and the limits, you read the changes, you run the checks, and you could explain every line to a teammate. The agent still does most of the typing. You do the judging.

Throughout this course you will look after one project: tiffin, a small Python web app for a home kitchen that delivers lunch boxes to offices. It takes orders, works out prices (₹100 a day, or a weekly plan at 10% off) and builds each day's delivery list. Its tests live in a tests/ folder and run with pytest.

The shortcut

Before you start, ask one question: "If this breaks, who pays?" If the answer is "nobody — it's just for me, today", vibe freely. If the answer is a customer, a teammate or future you, switch to owning: read, test, understand.

"Plot how many orders we got each day last month." If it is wrong, you shrug and ask again. Nobody pays, so vibe away.

The trap is the quiet promotion: a prototype that "just works" slides into production without anyone reading it. Ask "who pays?" again whenever the answer might have changed.

Remember

  • Vibe coding means accepting AI output by feel; it suits throwaway work.
  • Shortcut: "If this breaks, who pays?" Anyone but you means read, test and understand.
  • Trap: prototypes that quietly become shipped code without a second look.

Write your answer, then compare it with a rubric and a model answer.

ExplainVibe it or own it?

A friend says: "I vibe coded the ticket-payment page for our college fest over the weekend. It works, so it's ready to go live." Explain what vibe coding is, when it is a good fit, and what you would do before this page takes real money.
