Decentralization
The co-op's ledger now lives on four laptops. But suppose Ravi set up all four, and only software he controls can approve new blocks. There would be four copies and still one boss. Decentralization is about who holds control, not about how many copies exist.
The rule
Decentralized means no single party can change the rules or the record alone.
Three words get mixed up constantly. They answer different questions:
| Word | Question it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Centralized | Is there one controller? | A bank's internal ledger |
| Distributed | Is the data spread over many machines? | A company's database copied to 40 of its own servers |
| Decentralized | Is control spread over independent parties? | A public blockchain run by thousands of unrelated node operators |
A distributed system can still be centralized. The company's 40 servers all obey one company.
Nodes on a blockchain play different roles:
- Full nodes download every block and check it against the rules. They are the network's auditors.
- Light clients keep only the small block headers and ask full nodes for proofs, which suits a phone.
- Block producers, called miners or validators, assemble new blocks.
The key point: a full node rejects an invalid block even when a block producer made it. Producers propose; every full node decides for itself.
Decentralization is a spectrum, not a switch. Useful measures: How many independent parties run full nodes? How many would have to collude to censor or rewrite transactions? Who can change the software rules, and can users refuse to run the change?
The shortcut
Ask "who can act alone?" List everyone who could, on their own, add a bad entry, erase a good one, or change the rules. If that list has a single name on it, the system is centralized, however many copies exist.
Count the copies
Four laptops each hold the full ledger. That makes it distributed, but it does not settle the question.
The trap is hearing "runs on hundreds of servers" and concluding "decentralized". Always ask who controls those servers.
Drills
Answer fast — trust the rule.
A payments app stores its ledger on 200 servers in five countries, all run by one company. How should you describe it?
A block producer sends a full node a block that breaks the rules. What does the full node do?
Which device is a light client best suited to?
Which question best measures how decentralized a network is?
Remember
- Decentralized means no single party can change the rules or the record alone.
- Shortcut: ask "who can act alone?" One name on the list means centralized.
- Trap: many servers make a system distributed, not decentralized. Full nodes check every block; producers only propose.
