Column Addition — When Mental Math Runs Out
Completing the ten and completing the hundred are fast — right up until a
problem has too many digits, or too many awkward gaps, to track in your head
at once. 4,867 + 2,385 isn't impossible to do mentally, but it's easy to lose
a digit along the way. For problems like that, you want a method that never
asks you to hold more than one small fact in your head at a time: column
addition.
One column at a time
Line the numbers up by place value — ones under ones, tens under tens — and add each column separately, starting from the ones:

------Ones: 7 + 5 = 12. Two digits — too big for one column. Write the 2, and
carry the leftover ten into the tens column.
See it first
That's the moment column addition depends on: the point where a column's total passes 9 and has to spill into the next one.
8 + 7 = 15 ones — too many for one column. Bundle ten of them into a rod, and 5 ones are left over. That bundled ten is the carry.
The carry joins the next column's sum
The tens column isn't just "6 + 8" — it's "6 + 8, plus whatever ten got carried in":

526 + 8 + 1 (carried) = 15 again: write the 5, carry another 1.
6 + 8 + 1 = 15 again — same split as the ones column, one column over. The carried ten joins the sum before you split it back into write-down and carry.
Keep going, column by column, and each one is the same small question: add the two digits and whatever carried in, write down the ones part, carry the rest.

8 + 3 + 1 = 12 — one ten to carry, 2 ones to write down.
The thousands column is different — nothing was carried into it, and its own total stays under ten:
4 + 2 + 1 = 7 — under ten, so nothing to carry. Not every column regroups.
❓ Cross-question — "Isn't this slower than completing the ten?" For a problem like
47 + 38, yes — completing the ten wins easily. Column addition earns its keep on problems with more digits or messier numbers, where holding the whole calculation in your head risks losing a digit. Pick whichever tool fits the problem; neither one is the right way to add.
